What Somatic Therapy Is

We don’t change the way you think, we change the way you feel.

At Downtown Somatic Therapy, we recognize the body’s wisdom and track sensations that help you access deeper feelings, ultimately promoting change and transformation.

Somatic therapy has received more attention in the past few years, as more people have brushed up against the limits of traditional talk therapy and as social media platforms like TikTok have popularized the term. It can be difficult to sift through the jargon soup of various somatic therapies and understand their similarities and differences. That’s where we come in.

By focusing on emotions, we help you move beyond thinking about your issues, and actually change the way you feel. This style of therapy is also sometimes referred to as experiential therapy.

Who It Helps

People come to therapy for different reasons, but what they have in common is that they are at a point where they feel like they could really use some help. They may feel unhappy, stressed, anxious, depressed or want help making sense of painful experiences from the recent or more distant past.

The Modalities We Practice

Our therapists are trained in a variety of approaches like AEDP, Somatic Experiencing, Gestalt, Internal Family Systems and EFT.

•        Somatic Experiencing (SE) focuses on healing past trauma.

•        Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) focuses on core emotions like anger, grief, fear, joy, disgust or excitement and how they are processed.

•        Sensorimotor Psychotherapy tracks how our body holds specific patterns and habits from our early attachment relationships and past experiences.

•        Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) addresses specific traumatic memories through bilateral stimulation to change the way these memories live in the brain.

•        Gestalt focuses on the present moment and tracks body sensations, gestures and sounds to bring awareness to core emotions underneath the surface.

FAQs

Will my insurance cover our sessions?

Unfortunately, the answer varies quite widely. One important caveat to keep in mind is that using insurance to pay for therapy requires you to receive a mental health diagnosis. That information is passed along to your insurance company. Some people are not comfortable with this and decide not to seek reimbursement from their insurance companies. We have found it challenging to work directly with insurance companies and have elected not to be an in-network provider with any insurance companies. However, we will support any efforts from the people we work with to receive reimbursement.

Do I pay every session? How do I pay?

We prefer weekly payments, but can work with you on an alternative payment schedule if needed. We accept the following forms of payment: Venmo, Zelle, credit cards and HSA cards.

What is therapy like?

A therapy session is a minimum of a weekly, 45-minute session. Some people come more often or have longer sessions, which can allow for deeper work. It often begins with a brief, gentle pause to allow you to check-in with yourself and orient yourself to the work we’re going to do together. Then, we will begin wherever feels most relevant to you. People often begin with a feeling that is still with them or that has been on their mind over the last week. As you talk, your therapist will help guide the conversation to help you connect to and process your feelings associated with what you are talking about. Usually this back and forth allows for a deeper conversation and practice to emerge, which typically take up the full amount of session time. Sometimes, more than one topic comes up in a session. We will do our best to make space for everything you want to talk about and start with what feels most important.

How long does therapy take?

This is a great question. Our goal is for therapy to be as brief as possible while also making sure that you have gotten everything you came to us for. Every person is different and everyone moves along their own path at their own pace. The most important thing is that you feel like therapy is helping and that you can leave a session feeling that you got something positive or healing out of our work together. Conversations about why therapy is not moving are also really valuable. If you feel like you’re not getting what you wanted out of your therapy, please speak up.
